Technical Direction Projects
Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice By Kate Hamill is an adaptation of a book by the same name. This project was a large show for me, and was a very cohesive process. Our scenic designer, Sophia Kothe, wanted to create a world sprung from a contemporary romance novel. As such, we got to deal in over scaled flown units, brilliant full stage portals, and the piece de resistance: Mechanized and automated turning periaktois.
Gilgamesh: The Assyrian Epic… Sorta
Gilgamesh! The Assyrian Epic… Sorta is a piece devised by a host of university of South Dakota students lead and later directed by Ryan Bernier. Gilgamesh was a stylistic blend between epic theatre and standup comedy. Victor Shonk, our scenic Designer, wanted to incorporate low relief carving of both cuneiform (early language system) and lamassu (a mythological creature) on stage in addition to other early Assyrian architecture. to give the set a meta-theatrical element characteristic to standup, our shop also fashioned a forced perspective practical lighting grid to appear over the unit set.
Bat Boy
Bat Boy is a dark musical about the life and first of a boy born part man part bat. Scenic Designer Victor Shonk wanted to use the set to highlight an 80’s horror genre inspired deign, he set the play in a monochromatic cave, with features intended to intimidate audience and characters alike. This show demanded from our shop, extensive portal fabrication, wagons running on top of various decks (and also in knife tracks!), and a nearly full line set schedule.
The Wolves
The Wolves is a story about the coming of age and unification of a high school girls soccer team. The scenic design concept by Eddy directed the design towards a plain stage with a false proscenium and a turfed stage and almost nothing else (as honestly, the show calls for). This show was an excellent opportunity for a young technical director to really understand what it means to have a clear systematic approach to anticipating and solving potential problems in a scenic design.

The 39 Steps
The 39 steps is a spy-thriller with a comedic twist, and our director, Dan spirapoulos, wanted to lean into the silhouette of film noir and a grandiose art deco style with a versatile, highly leveled space.
Ada and the Engine
My saga with Director Dan Spiropoulas begins in a production of Lauren Gunderson’s Ada and the Engine a touching show following the life of a mathematician and artist: Ada Byron. The show is set in_____ and needs a way to bring an air of majesty to our Blackbox theatre.

Automation Projects
Automated scenery to me is its own kind of mechanical design. I love designing systems; I love making things that can work together for a smooth effect. This is the field of my most rapid development by far and I couldn’t be more excited about it.
